How Much Does It Cost to Make a Short Film in Los Angeles?

Short films are where directors prove themselves, and more and more brands are using them to tell their biggest stories. Budgets range from micro to six figures. Here is what goes into one and where small budgets actually win.
The budget lines
Script and development.
Cast. SAG-AFTRA has agreements built for low budget shorts, so check their current terms early.
Locations, permits, and insurance.
Crew and gear.
Post: edit, color, sound, VFX, and music licensing.
Festival submission fees.
Where small budgets win
Constraint forces decisions. My shorts RADHIKA, LIFAFE, and Flicker in the Dark were each built around what we had, not what we wished we had. Fewer locations, a tight cast, and a director who also shoots and finishes the film keeps the money on screen instead of in overhead.
