Lighting, reflections, and camera tracking are the holy trinity for blending CG with live action. Nail these, and your renders stop looking like they belong in a separate universe. Today, I want to share a workflow that combines AI HDRIs and COLMAP tracking to help you integrate CG elements seamlessly into your footage using Blender. This approach balances realism with artistic control, giving you the best of both worlds.

What Are AI HDRIs and Why They Matter


AI HDRIs are high dynamic range images generated or enhanced by artificial intelligence tools. Unlike traditional HDRIs captured on location, AI HDRIs can be tailored to specific lighting moods or scenes. Some Skybox-style AI tools export HDRI EXR files ready for Blender, making them a powerful resource for environment lighting blender setups.


Why use AI HDRIs? They offer:


  • Consistent lighting that matches your scene’s mood

  • Customizable reflections that react realistically on CG surfaces

  • Faster iteration compared to shooting real HDRIs on set


Keep in mind, AI HDRIs are not a perfect replacement for real lighting. They can sometimes mismatch your footage’s natural lighting or introduce unrealistic reflections if not carefully art directed. Use them as a base and tweak your Blender world shader HDRI settings to fit your scene.


Preparing Your Footage for COLMAP Tracking


The foundation of any 3D camera tracking workflow is clean, consistent footage. Start by converting your video into an image sequence using FFmpeg. This lets COLMAP analyze each frame individually.

  • Use FFmpeg image sequence export

  • Disable any stabilization or in-camera corrections

  • Prefer footage with locked exposure and white balance to avoid flickering

  • Avoid footage with heavy vignetting or lens distortion unless corrected


This consistency helps COLMAP build a more accurate point cloud blender and camera pose estimation.


Using COLMAP for Camera Tracking and Reconstruction


COLMAP combines Structure from Motion (SfM) and Multi-View Stereo (MVS) to reconstruct camera positions and a sparse point cloud from your image sequence. You can batch script COLMAP to speed up processing on large sequences.


Steps:


  1. Run SfM to get camera poses and sparse point cloud

  2. Run MVS for dense point cloud if needed

  3. Export camera poses and point cloud data


Import these into Blender using a photogrammetry blender importer addon. After import, clean up your scene cleanup blender by removing noise points and fixing scale and orientation. Set the world origin to a logical point in your scene for easier navigation.


Building an Infinite Cyclorama Backdrop


To simulate an infinite backdrop, build a cyclorama blender using a simple deform modifier on a beveled mesh. This creates a smooth curved surface that wraps around your scene.


Project your footage onto this cyclorama in the shader editor:


  • Use an image sequence texture with your footage

  • Apply window projection via texture coordinates for accurate alignment

Here’s why:


  • Exposure consistency vfx is crucial. Flickering brightness confuses COLMAP’s matching.

  • White balance consistency ensures colors match frame to frame.

  • Vignetting correction prevents dark corners from being misinterpreted as features.

  • Camera response curve shifts can alter pixel intensities unpredictably.


NVIDIA PPISP (Physically Plausible Image Signal Processing) is a research approach that models camera and ISP behavior to compensate for these issues. Setting Up a Reusable Blender Camera Rig
